Dreaming with their Feet

This year Jason and Elaina have joined one of Ms McLean's mainstream Year 11 Dance classes.  They attend lessons over 4 periods each week as part of their Individual programmes.

In the past week they have performed both individual and group routines as part of their assessments.

Take a look!                                                                                                                                                       posted 1st April 2014

Athletics Day                                  Tuesday 19 February 2014

It seems that every year Christchurch saves its hottest day of the year to coincide with when Papanui High School has Athletics Day.  The temperatures soared to more than 33 degrees, so it was a day of competing in our events, then looking for shade and drinking lots of water till the next race.

I ran in the 100 metres race. It was fun because I came 3rd behind Joshua. Mr Knowles started but he broke at the start. (Finn)

Lucky I'm not a horse! (Mr Knowles)

I did the discus. I threw it far away. It wasn’t hard. (Jonty)

I was in the long jump. I ran up and jumped high into the

sand-pit. (Shanna)

I did run in the 100 metres race. I came 4th. It was fun.

Afterwards I felt good.  I can run fast.(Brooke)

It was VERY hot!  I liked doing shot-put because I'm so

good at it.  I'm very powerful. (Hope)

The shot-put was fun and hard. I had to throw it out

as far as I could.  It was very HOT! We all put sunblock

on and drank a lot of water.  (Finn)

I like shot-put because it's fun and I'm getting better at it.

It was stinking hot! (Olivia)

It was a bit boring because we had to sit around a lot

and drink lots of water all the time. (Libby)

The best bit about the day was all students dressed in

their House colours. (Mrs Bird)

PMP programme

Both classes enjoy 2 PMP (Perceptual Motor Programmes) each week. The classes are divided into 4 groups which then rotate through 4 different activity stations.  Activities include balance, fitness and speed, following directions, as well as crawling and jumping.  For students in chairs or on walkers, each activity is modified so that each student can join in to the best level he / she can.  We aim to improve confidence and self-esteem as new tasks are mastered.  We continue to raise the level of challenge and build on skills that have been learned and mastered.

JOLT

I like going to Jolt.  My favourite dance is Mama Mia.                                                         ( Jonty)

I like doing the warm-up.  We have to follow Lynne.  I like doing the movements. It gets me fit.  ( Joshua)

I like dancing to the song Something in the Water by Brooke Fraser.  I like making shapes and moving to the music.  Lynne is a beautiful teacher.  (Tor)

Performance Dance

In 2013 students of the Kimi Ora Unit were invited to perform at the Papanui High School Infinite Dance show.  This was a showcase for all the school's Dance classes and we were delighted to be able to seize yet another opportunity for the Kimi Ora students to work alongside their mainstream peers.   Later in the year we also performed at a NZ Care function in the city.  This was a hugely successful occasion and once more we received a lot of warm praise for our show.

In 2014 we intend to further develop our performance programme and Lynne Cotton will be working with our best dancers and performers in weekly rehearsals.  Watch this space for dates and times of our community appearances!
