Focus on Ability - Short Film Competition

We have made a film and entered it into a short film competition. The film aims to promote the abilities of people with disabilities. Hope Knapman-Evans did all of the filming and editing. Hope is severely visually disabled. The students are all involved in the film and enjoyed showing off their abilities and talents.

Our film is called I CAN DO ANYTHING. We are entered in the SCHOOL ENTRANT - DOCUMENTARY category.

Papanui High School Ball

We had an awesome time at the ball. It was my first school ball that I have ever been to. Dancing with all my friends and having a fun time was wonderful. I had a nice pretty dress on. It was black and pink. I looked very nice with my face and hair done up form our pamper day in the Kimi Ora Unit. I hope I can get to go to the next school ball. By Hope.

Kimi Ora Day Spa

What a wonderful day of pampering for everyone! We were lucky enough to have two lovely hairdressers spend the cutting and styling our hair. We all had manicures and pedicures. The girls looked amazing wearing their make-up and the boys all looked smooth after their shaves.

Many of the Senior students attended the Papanui High School Ball that evening and looked stunning.

Even More Kimi Ora Birthdays!

Last week we celebrated two more May birthdays!

Tor turned 17 and Joshua turned 20.  What a party!  Great singing, dancing and some really AWESOME cake!

Ngaio Marsh visits

Posted December 20, 2013

Every week I go to Ngaio Marsh Rest Home.  We talk to the residents.  I like talking to Dick.  He teases me.  We then sing songs.  The residents love us going there.  On our last visit we sang Christmas carols.  I am excited to go back there this year.

Weekly Photopages

Updated May 13 2014

Each week we try to put together a photopage of some of the many events and activities that have taken place that week.

We think that photographs are really an important part of what we do.  They can often be the only way that the parents and families are able to keep up with what their sons or daughters are doing at school.  Up until now we have been printing these off and sending them home via the student diaries.  Now we can upload them to our website.

Many of the photos are taken by the students in our photography group.  Others are taken by our team members when we remember to grab a camera!

The results are often quite special.

Take a look!

nb. because these have been created via Microsoft Publisher, any Mac users out there will have to rely on the hard-copies that come home each friday.  Sorry!

One In Five for 2 March 2014

Originally aired on One In Five, Sunday 2 March 2014

This week on One in Five, Katy Gosset is at Surfability Day at Christchurch's Sumner Beach.

The event, run by the local long boarders club, offers people with disabilities a chance to get out in the waves, each supported by a large crew of volunteers. The club runs an event each year to give something back to its beachside community: this year it chose the Surfability concept proposed by a club member, Gary Butt, who had run similar events in Kaitaia. The participants include novices and, in some cases, more experienced surfers testing the waters again after a life changing accident.

End of Year Showcase

posted December 2013

It was once again a full house when all the Kimi OIra students performed at our end-of-year showcase in front of parents, family, teachers and friends.

We farewelled Kelsey, Cameron and Grace this year, all now 21 years of age and High School graduates after 8 or 9 years as students in the Kimi Ora Unit.

The Perfomance Dance group delighted everyone with an awesome version of the legend of the 3 Mountains.  We sang and we danced and we watched heaps of photos that told the stories of our year, as well as the individual journeys of the leavers and their time with us in the Kimi Ora Unit.

We've added the Kimi Ora News

At the end of each term  we produce a full-colour magazine that tells the story of what we've been up to throughout that term.

Below, for the first time, is our latest edition of the Kimi Ora News.

Please be patient because it may take a minute or so to open!
