Our LIFE SKILLS programme:

Each Monday students from the senior class walk over to Pak'N Save do do their weekly shopping. Our senior students make their morning tea and lunches everyday at school. They search for healthy options at bargain prices.

Life Skills Programme

Here I am outside the shop.  It is called Crystal People.

Krystal loves crystals!

I go to work each Monday at 1pm.  My boss’s name is Deryn. She is nice I have to count precious stones as I unpacked them.

I am counting the gemstones and putting them into bags.

Joshua's work with the horses at Arion Farm

I work every Thursday at Arion farm.  The staff there are friendly.

I like working with the horses.  My jobs are to muck out the stables, brush down the horses and feed the horses.

There is a riding school at Arion farm.  I have been learning how to lead the horses around.

Next year I would like to do the Equine Course at the National Trade Academy. When I leave school I would like to work with horses.

The first in a series on the work experiences of the senior Kimi Ora students

Sammy at his CPIT Hospitality course

I bus to CPIT each Monday and Tuesday to the Hospitality Course.

We have been learning Barista skills.  I made a hot chocolate.

I used the coffee machine to fluff the milk.

We have learned to cook eggs in 3 different ways - scrambled, poached, and we made an omelette.  I made a hamburger with chips.

Nathaniel, William and I are on the course too.

Teaching for Life in a Changing World

Emphasis is placed on students gaining skills for life while in the Kimi Ora Unit.  All students complete functional life assessments and, together with parents and caregivers, key skills are targeted as part of each student's Individualised Education Plan (IEP).

Students in the senior class prepare their own morning teas and lunces at school.  the focus is on learning shopping skills, kitchen skills and making healthy eating choices.  Students shop for items they need.  it is great to watch students develop, knowing that they are gaining essential skills for life.

Work Experience opportunities are vital for students to gain skills, confidence and also provide stepping stones towards possible future employment.  Mrs Heather Robinson works to secure a variety of work placements in a range of industries for our students.

We thank Pak 'n Save Northlands, Countdown, Bishopdale Pets, Bishopdale Cycles, Mitre 10 Bishopdale, Harewood Cattery, Willowbank, Dowsons Shoes, Harvey's Real Estate and Kiwi Family Trust for their ongoing support.

We also have students involved in courses outside of school at AJs trust, CPIT and CTC.  Some students have mastered bussing to and from their course, an important Life Skill towards greater independence.
